Grotesk is a portrait assembled from the objects of a medicated life. A face drawn in soft graphite is covered with capsules stamped “20mg,” small figures, seals, and stray symbols, as though the dose had become the skin. The lips and the torn outer edge are laid in gold leaf, which gives the image the presence of a relic while the pills insist on something far more ordinary. The work moves between memory and irony, between the reverence we give an icon and the routine we give a prescription.
Original drawing in pencil and gold leaf by Seattle artist Milla Petrova.
Dimensions: 12 × 14 “
